- Ravenwood Cemetery
Website http://www.ravenwoodcemetery.com Builder Jimmie Earls Address 201 Rizer Ave Springfield, Kentucky Description I think it's easier to just tell you the legend...In the days following the Civil War, a band of outlaws known as the Sentinels ruled the Central Kentucky region using fear, intimidation and even murder to get what they desired. Their leader was named Jeremiah Stone, a rumored Satanist who showed no mercy for anyone - not even members of his own gang.Legend says that Stone sought out an old witch who lived in the backwoods of Washington County. The witch brokered a deal between Stone and Satan in which Jeremiah would become unstoppable, no mortal could touch him for a period of 17 years. Stone signed his soul away with the intention of never honoring the pact. Year after year, the Sentinels terrorized the land, wreaking havoc on every town and village in their path, confident in the evil invincibility. But every contract has a price to be paid.On All Hallow’s Eve 1887, U.S. Marshals and their associates caught up to Stone and his men on a farm in Washington County. A three-day shootout resulted in the death of the Sentinels and several lawmen. Since Jeremiah broke his contract with the devil, his power was taken away and he was left vulnerable to gunshots. As he
took his last breath, Stone refused to go to Hell and swore that he and his men would return every October 31st to once again roam the land and seek vengeance for their deaths.Because of their blasphemy, Stone and the Sentinels would deemed too vile for Christian burial, so they were laid to rest in Springfield’s Ravenwood Cemetery, a place for undesirables, vagrants and criminals.Over the years, the location of Ravenwood Cemetery has been lost, but rumors abound that it was located at the top of a hill just south of the old courthouse.Although their bodies may be at rest, every Halloween night, the restless spirits of the Sentinels return to the realm of the living to take their bloodthirsty ride for revenge.FORUM ID
